It's obviously inappropriate to compare Star Trek with Star Wars. I'd rather consider comparing the "Star Wars"' and "Lord of the Ring"'s universes (though they are of different genres). There's a great TV show "Babylon 5" that IMHO is as good as "Star Wars" (or even better), but it's unfortunately unknown to general public.
